Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Why family therapy?
Family therapy has been used effectively in the full range of human dilemmas; there is no category of relationship or psychological problem that has not been addressed with this approach. Good relationships are an important factor in psychological health.
Who is qualified to provide family therapy?
Family therapy is usually provided by clinical social workers or licensed therapists known as marriage and family therapists. These therapists have graduate or postgraduate degrees — and many are credentialed by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).
How will I know if a therapist is right for me?
You need to feel comfortable with your therapist. The purpose of a free initial session, is to provide you with the opportunity to have a sense if the therapist can help you, if you feel heard and understood. If the therapist is unable to work with the client, s/he will be happy to provide you with appropriate referrals to other professionals.
How much time will therapy last before I feel like taking control of my life again?
Time frame may depend on goals/needs, consistency of kept appointments, on problem identification and its severity, and commitment on mutually agreed goals setting and implementation. Part of the goals setting process is a preliminary estimate of how long the therapy will last. Please know that you may end therapy at any time. It will always be your choice.
Are results guaranteed?
Family therapy is often short term. Family therapy depends on how much willing are all participants or just those most able to participate. The specific treatment plan and associated results will depend on each individual's desire for change.

Do you charge for a consultation? How much?
Normally, therapists charge full fee even for consultation, but for 3-TierPLAN it is important that the client has the opportunity to experience the therapist before committing to the therapeutic relationship. For this reason, the initial consultation is free, competitive rates are offered afterwards.
Do you accept insurance?
We do not bill insurance companies directly. We provide you with a monthly statement to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please feel free to contact your healthcare insurer with questions regarding your coverage and reimbursement rates.
If we come for couples therapy, can we see the therapist individually as well?
Having individual sessions during the course of the couple's therapy, may be necessary as part of the therapeutic process, but not on a regular basis. If there is a need for individual sessions while in couple's therapy, then, a referral will be made upon request, to another therapist.
Is it going to be shared with my family, what I will share privately, with my therapist?
No. Everything shared during a session is extremely confidential. Nothing is shared without the client's written consent. Exemption to confidentiality policy includes legal obligation to disclose client information if the client is in danger to him/herself or others, if child, or other dependent adult abuse is suspected, or if subpoenaed by a court of law.
Are there any former clients I can contact about your services?
The 'About Us' page includes a link on what other clients are saying. To protect client confidentiality and privacy, without written permission, 3-TierPLAN cannot offer client reference names.
